Collaborative Collages: mixed media on canvas

2025

These small studies were inspired by my first LABA* session with Channan Ben Simon and Ruby Namdar.  Ruby introduced us to the term “axis mundi” as well as the philosopher Mircea Eliade who introduced this concept in the 1050’s.  Axis Mundi symbolizes the separation of earth from heaven, and thus creates a  liminal space.   In conjunction with our reading of Genesis when Jacob travels to an unknown land and encounters a ladder as well as wrestling with an angel I was very inspired to delve into this subject matter.

I created a series of collages repurposing my youngest son’s discarded graffiti stickers. In these works I found myself constructing liminal spaces with ladders going in many different directions. At first they were just going up, as if to the heavens, mimicking Jacob’s ladder.  As I progressed these ladders started to go in different directions.   It made me think of my role as a Jewish Mother post October 7th, trying to find my place in this new world.
